By far the coolest place to find a distinctly unique hat, the Alternative Design Studio on 18th St. near Valencia designs and makes over half their selection of men's and women's hats. Owner and hat maker Elina's penchant for women's cloches — that basic, sleek hat characteristic of the '20s — is most apparent from her incredible selection of her own creative cloche designs, and also some very hip angora felt cloches from Moscow. Handknit beanies and caps in all sorts of colors, designs, and yarns like mohair and a furry microfiber are shelved away on the far back wall where you will also uncover loads of berets and bucket hats for men or women. Men can chose straw hats or classic designs stitched together with simply patterned upholstery fabrics. A little row of baby hats, one knit like a strawberry, another like a pumpkin with a leaf popping up, nestles underneath the men's section. With such a selection, you might even find Jack Handy's cannon hat.
