The mission of the Harvey Milk Institute (HMI) is to foster the development and examination of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer culture and community in the Bay Area and beyond. HMI conducts programs that present and interpret works by contemporary and historical queer artists and critical thinkers that explore community and personal issues within the context of queer culture.
At HMI we focus on developing and strengthening queer culture while educating ourselves about issues facing our own community members and promoting new understanding among segments of LGBTQ communities. Rather than pressing for greater representation in existing heterocentric institutions, HMI has created its own, by and for all queers.
Harvey Milk Institute strengthens queer culture. We produce queer arts, cultural and educational events year-round. Queer is not just for the month of June anymore.
